Ben has been a fantastic servant of the club. He was a key coach until 2015 and has written his thoughts here.
I was initially a junior member of the club, with a love for the game. I played in the Herts youth, winning the event :) This lead me to being able to join the county squads and be selected regularly to represent Hertfordshire, culminating in reaching the boys doubles last eight of the national finals.
I began helping out at the club from a young age, I gained my level 1 and 2 coaching qualifications with the support of the Bob and the club. This has lead me to be lucky enough to be selected by the Herts schools badminton association as the young coach of the year on two occasions, accolades I am very proud of.
I attended the University of Hertfordshire which allowed me to carry on my coaching with the club. While at University I was given the opportunity in my second year to become the first team Badminton men's captain, third year to be the Badminton club chairman and also be the Varsity University captain. After leaving university I also volunteered some of my time to come back and coach and advise the new team and players.
I was also able to take an active role within the development of badminton in the local area. I am part of the North Herts Community Badminton Network committee and had an an active role in the Letchworth and District Badminton League. Both of these roles allowed me to influence how badminton is delivered in the local area.
I have now been able to start my own club, Shuttles Junior Badminton Club, with Jon Pancutt another young coach. We are now getting great numbers and we are able to push young players to reach their potential, as Baldock badminton club did for me. I have also been able to use this experience to volunteer at the county junior sessions, and help some of the top players in the area to progress.
I have now also been able to take up an active role in the county, playing regularly for the 2nd/3rd team and on the odd occasion for the 1st team! With the experience I have gained I have been able to take up a role as a senior county selector.
I hope to be able to influence as many young players as possible and maybe even find the next Olympic champion. They are out there somewhere.
